SADAQAH AL-FITR
An individual who has wealth above nisab on the day of Eid al-Fitr must pay sadaqah al-Fitr on behalf of themselves and every dependent member of their household, including newborn infants. This charity ranges from $8-$40 per person (as of February 2024), depending on whether the price of a measure of barley or a measure of dates is considered. The Prophet (ﷺ) “obligated sadaqah al-Fitr–a portion of dates or a portion of barley–on all members of the community, young and old…” [Bukhari and Muslim].
This charity is to be given to the poor so that they can enjoy the blessing of Eid. The Prophet (ﷺ) “ordered that it be paid before the people go for Eid salah” [Bukhari and Muslim]. In modern times, however, it should be paid days before Eid so that it can reach recipients in a timely manner.
