• The Prophet ﷺ would recite these supplications at the beginning of the morning or evening, respectively [Muslim].
  • They remind us that the world oscillates between night and day only through Allah’s power and absolute control over everything in the universe–all praise is due to Him alone.
  • We are also reminded that every day and night is a new opportunity. Hence, we seek assistance from the One who transitions us between night and day to attain the good and avoid the evil in each. We also ask for protection from laziness and the disabling effects of old age, as these could limit our ability to take advantage of each new day.
  • Lastly, as we transition between day and night, we implore our Lord to save us from the difficulty of the two most consequential transitions of our existence: the day we are buried and the day we will face the results of our deeds.
