What is podcasting

Podcasting enables you to listen to audio files at the time and place of your choosing. To begin, you must have podcasting software installed on your computer. Follow your program's instructions for subscribing to podcasts and modifying preference settings for updates, for example daily or weekly. You can listen directly from your computer through the software, or on-the-go by synching up a portable MP3 player, such as an iPod.

Podcasting describes a process where you can subscribe to an audio program much like you would a magazine. Using a software program you can add a podcast (also called a "feed") to your subscriptions. Each time the audio program is published, your software will download a copy for listening on your computer or portable device, such as an MP3 player.

Because podcasting is a subscription service, it does not enable you to go back into an audio archive and download individual episodes. Additionally, every episode of a program is downloaded to your computer -- even the ones you may not listen to.

How to subscribe to a podcast

1) Click on the box containing the podcast's link.
2) Copy the link (PC users: right click and select "Copy Shortcut," Mac users: click and hold the mouse button and then select "Copy")
3) Paste the link into the subscription field of your podcasting software. This process may vary depending on your software.

What do I need to subscribe to a podcast

There are a number of free software applications through which you can subscribe to a podcast, for example Apple's iTunes software, which supports podcasting and provides a tight integration with the iPod and many mp3 players, or Google Reader, which is straightforward and easy to use.
